Social Practices Assembly. Community and Group Agreements Workshop

Location: Learning Grounds De Zandweg Allotment Garden, Rotterdam South
Participants: Teachers in the Social Practices Minor Study Programme, Willem de Kooning Academy
Duration: 2 hours

Beginning with a curated reading excerpt from a reader prepared for the workshop, followed by a series of prompts, the group reflected on what it means to develop community and group agreements grounded in a culture of consequences within the learning community of the Social Practices minor programme.

Drawing on approaches to abolitionist pedagogy, the workshop considered how a culture of consequences might move beyond a fixed code of conduct based on punitive measures. Instead, it was approached as a mutually negotiable space guided by principles of respect, mutuality, interdependence, and accountability, in which both individual needs and the needs of the group could be acknowledged and supported.

Following the reading, mapping, and discussion sessions, participants were invited to harvest kale, collard greens, and Swiss chard from the garden.

Prompt: Why is everyone here? What is required of you as a group?
Prompt: What does each individual need in order to feel safe, comfortable and excited to meet their goals?
