The Obra Social Manual

Book translation, 2016

Related projects: Dignity / Dignidad, The Reclaiming Workshop

The Obra Social Manual, a 25-page manual of civil disobedience on the tactics of recuperating houses- a direct action how-to. The manual describes the tactics of the Obra Social campaign launched by the PAH in 2012. It offers a step-by-step guide for reinstating the social use of empty housing owned by banks, by putting them in the hands of evicted individuals and families. The Obra Social manual is a model for alternate approaches to living in times of crisis. It provides a step-by-step guide to recuperation: how to find buildings, which buildings to target, the relation between real-estate speculation and eviction, how to enter a building, and how stay once you are inside.

The Obra Social (Social Work) Manual is a translation project initiated by artist Michelle Teran and published by The Journal of Aesthetics& Protest.  The English translation accompanies Dignity / Dignidad, a feature-length film about an Obra Social building in Mósteles, Madrid, and the Reclaiming Workshop, both developed in 2016.

The original Spanish version was released by the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca (PAH) in 2013.

Urban media art is possibly one of the most momentous expansions within the field of contemporary public art. Referring to various forms of media-aesthetic, artistic engagement in urban environments and evolving from a mix of genealogies of media art, avant-garde, architecture, urban development, design and technology, and biology, urban media art creates a space in which artists make, utilize and critically explore innovations in software and technology to create artworks, installations and situations in response to the urban discourses and urgencies of our time.

Microhistories Anthology

12821339_10153386573627681_2424231715855073_n

Microhistories studies the form of the video essay, which can be said to treat its subject matter in a critical and investigative way while at the same time reflecting its processes and its considerations. It shares this preoccupation with the small, marginalized stories with an approach within the field of history, so-called microhistory. Here one studies habits and routines rather than deliberate actions, underlying mentalities rather than explicit views. In microhistory the exception is more interesting than the rule, including the everyday, the overlooked details – all this that can prove to be as important as the “grand” recognized history. This publication brings together the results of a three year artistic research project which brought together prominent practices and theoreticians within three fields – art, artistic research and microhistory – in order to build shared knowledge.

Critical Theories and Critical Practices in Research

Screen Shot 2014-12-02 at 4.38.28 PM
The conception and the structure of this publication is highlighting a possible understanding of artistic research from the perspective of using key concepts and the intervention methods of critical theory (in the way it is understood in the history and theory of contemporary art, instead of the way it is understood in philosophy) as well as from the perspective of the product of artistic research, as a work of art produced by former or current PhD candidates involved in artistic research doctoral programmes.

Walking and Mapping: Artists as Cartographers

Some of my works are featured in a new book by Karen O’Rourke on artistic cartography published by MIT Press, 2012

http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/walking-and-mapping

Contemporary artists beginning with Guy Debord and Richard Long have returned again and again to the walking motif. Debord and his friends tracked the urban flows of Paris; Long trampled a path in the grass and snapped a picture of the result (A Line Made by Walking). Mapping is a way for us to locate ourselves in the world physically, culturally, or psychologically; Debord produced maps like collages that traced the “psychogeography” of Paris. Today, the convergence of global networks, online databases, and new tools for location-based mapping coincides with a resurgence of interest in walking as an art form. In Walking and Mapping, Karen O’Rourke explores a series of walking/mapping projects by contemporary artists. Some chart “emotional GPS”; some use GPS for creating “datascapes” while others use their legs to do “speculative mapping.” Many work with scientists, designers, and engineers.

Sniff, Scrape, Crawl…

The Piet Zwart Institute Master in Media Design and Communication department launches its new publication with Mute publishing: Sniff, Scrape, Crawl… {on privacy, surveillance and our shadowy data-double}.

A silent listener to our streaming confessions, the ambient social network envelops itself around our rituals, banalities and routines and traces the specificities of our dataset, or rather our shadowy data-double. Crawling and scraping, it creates a portrait of not only who we are as individuals, but also our demographic character, status and potential future self. Just as our data-double grows exponentially through these infinite feedback loops, the debate on privacy also proliferates. While discussions on the value of public space and the commons have regrettably waned, privacy has become the zone of contention for lawyers, large corporations, governments and individuals, who all have much at stake.

Sniff, Scrape, Crawl…. is the result of trying to make sense of these debates. Contributions from: Birgit Bachler, Seda Guerses, Inge Hoonte, Nicolas Maleve, Men in Grey, Julian Oliver & Danja Vasiliev, Michelle Teran, Steve Rushton, Discrete Dialogue Network and Amy Suo Wu.

Hacking the City –
Interventions in public and communicative spaces

The Book

http://www.wired.com/beyond_the_beyond/2011/06/hacking-the-city/

The project “Hacking the City” took place on the occasion of the “European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.” Twenty museums collaborated in a multifaceted common series of exhibitions called “Mapping the Region.” Museum Folkwang contributed with an experimental project which went far away from traditional museum activities. More than thirteen projects in public space, a “Base-Station” in the museum and a homepage (www.hackingthecity.org) were realized.

Visual Geographies

bf_27_3-755x984

I’m currently involved in a discussion on visual geographies between Kate Armstrong, Vancouver multi-media artist and scholar and Garnet Hertz, a Canadian artist and scholar based in California for BlackFlash Magazine.

All three artists deal explicitly with contemporary ways of mapping space, or in some cases, a contemporary poetics of space. We’re drawing them together from three very different parts of the world to discuss their newest projects as well as the ideas driving them.
