participatory walks and installation

For the Das Verwanten 2 Festival I facilitated a series of walks through the city of Gent. Participants were given a scanner, a display monitor and other recording devices and helped map the neighbourhoods of the city.

When discovering a wireless CCTV signal, participants were asked to make a call to an answering machine installed at Vooruit and describe what they were seeing. Visitors to Vooruit therefore had access to the private experience of walking through the audio reports.

The online map produced from the walks includes surveillance footage, images from the street, conversations between walkers and also reportages recorded from the answering machine.
